Meet Thorny
Michael "Thorny" Brewer
Aviator. Educator. Leader.
Michael "Thorny" Brewer has spent a career doing what most pilots only dream about — and then dedicated himself to helping others do the same. His path through aviation spans general aviation, the United States Air Force, the USAF Thunderbirds, commercial airline operations, and a deep commitment to aviation education.
What sets Thorny apart is not just the breadth of his experience — it is the way he brings it to bear for the people he works with. Whether in the cockpit, in front of an audience, or at the design table for a training program, the mission is the same: help people get better.
A Career in Aviation
General Aviation
Where It Started
Like many aviators, Thorny's story begins in general aviation — learning to fly, building hours, and developing the foundational skills and love of flight that would carry him through everything that followed.
United States Air Force
Military Service
Thorny served as a military aviator in the United States Air Force, flying high-performance aircraft and operating in demanding, high-stakes environments. Military aviation shaped his approach to discipline, standardization, crew resource management, and performance under pressure.
USAF Thunderbirds
The Thunderbirds
Selection to the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron — the Thunderbirds — represents one of the highest honors in military aviation. As a Thunderbird, Thorny flew precision formation aerobatics before audiences around the world, representing the United States Air Force and the men and women who serve in it.
Commercial Aviation
Airline Operations
Thorny transitioned to commercial airline operations, bringing the discipline and professionalism of military aviation into the airline environment. The airline cockpit added new dimensions to his understanding of crew dynamics, standardization, and the human factors that shape safety and performance.
Education & Instruction
Teaching the Next Generation
Throughout his career and increasingly in recent years, Thorny has focused on aviation education — as a flight instructor, speaker, curriculum designer, and mentor. The goal is to take what a career in aviation teaches and make it available to others in a form they can actually use.
